Interview with Raven Tao founder of Pearls & Arsenic, Hong Kong

Pearls & Arsenic — Brand Summary
Born in the electric heart of Hong Kong, Pearls & Arsenic is the intoxicating vision of designer Raven Tao, a brand that blends old‑world glamour with contemporary edge. Her corsets and corset-style accessories are synonymous with femme fatale elegance — mesh and lace meeting a whisper of danger worthy of their name.
Pearls & Arsenic’s work balances decadence and discipline, echoing historic influences with modern silhouettes. Though the atelier officially closed in 2020, it relaunches in 2026 — a cult favourite for collectors and corset lovers who romanticise the intersection of sensual restraint and mischievous luxury.

✧ Brand & Beginnings – Stitching the Origins of Design

  • How did your corsetry label begin, and what drew you into corsetry?
I’ve loved corset style since my teens, and when my collection of 60+ corsets continued to grow, I decided to create a few designs for myself – and from there the idea to start a brand was born. My preference was for breathable, summer-friendly corsets that could easily be worn as statement fashion or under clothing, and were easy to sit or move in for long periods of time (petite length underbusts).

  • What defines your corset design philosophy or sets your silhouette apart?
Mesh and breathable underbusts for international wear, and petite lengths.
  • Which muses, eras, or aesthetics shaped your corset brand identity?
Victorian corset silhouettes and Edwardian aesthetics.
  • Who do you imagine wearing your corsets — and what should they feel?
Wearers are passionate, feisty and alluring with a hint of danger and spice.

✧ Craft & Philosophy – The Shape of Creation

  • How are your corsets brought to life — handcrafted, atelier produced, or factory made?
Pearls & Arsenic corsets are hand-finished in an industrial atelier in a hybrid process that combines factory organization with manual, handmade craftsmanship. We offer signature capsule collections and rare limited-run hand-embellished small-batch designs.
  • Which corset materials or techniques best express your vision?
    Lace, mesh, and black.
  • How does your process transform classic corsetry for the modern world?
Corsets as wearable couture; luxury outerwear or innerwear. Corsets can be worn as cinchers or belts over shirts or blazers, or stealthed under clothing as one desires.
