If you’re considering moving to Hong Kong…

If you’re not used to city-hopping, moving to Hong Kong can be an intense adventure. Here are a few practical tips from this long term, city-hopping global citizen and long term Hong Konger.

And a fun article on what makes a real Hong Konger.

HONG KONG : Welcome to the city!

General :
Walk fast, traffic on the left, please don’t stop suddenly in foot traffic or we may end up in an awkward pavement tango.

Taxis with the cover over For Hire dashboard sign are going to Kowloon side. 4pm is taxi changeover time (4-4:30pm tough getting a cab.) Cash is used in taxis, but some have additional varying payment methods.

Uber is the main taxi / car hail platform.

Other transport uses cash or octopus cards / tourist day passes (available at MTR train stations). MTR now accepts visa / Mastercard / unionpay card at MTR gates.

Essentials :
Tissue : Always carry small tissue pack for restaurants / other uses that shall not be named (when you need this, you’ll thank me.)
Charcoal : Always carry activated charcoal (for any minor belly upset from food.)
Electrolytes : remember to drink electrolytes in sweaty summertime, if I skip this I feel awful until I replenish. Coconut water, pocari sweat, gatorade etc. are all available at 7-11.

Surviving :
Party responsibly : it’s an easy city to indulge 24-7, so take good care of you!
Exercise : make this a priority, or burnout can fast find you.
Go greenery : outdoors scenery can help the brain adapt to intense city life of screens and neon lights. And HK is 70%+ national park greenery! Hiking, trail walking and water sports are very popular.
Lean on support : at the first signs of wellbeing wobbles, please consider support for maintenance. Think of it like a personal coach but for mental health & physical wellbeing. Anxiety, stress, depression and overwhelm is common symptom of our overworking culture. I often say it’s like Formula One car having a pit crew in order to perform their best. A good pit crew is essential!

Welcome to our glorious, electric, hectic and vibrant city of Hong Kong!
